Troubleshooting Unwanted Echo and Feedback

Here are the most common causes of feedback (a loud screeching noise) or unwanted echo effects in your studio:

  • Using speakers instead of headphones
  • Using audio routing software (Loopback, UA Console, a DAW, etc) in a way that loops JackTrip's audio back into itself
  • The Studio Echo volume level is not set to zero
  • Using a Soundscapes preset or configuration that includes a Reverb effect
  • Using the local Monitor feature in the desktop app with a slow audio interface (no ASIO driver on Windows, using a large buffer size, or just slow hardware)

With JackTrip, it's easy to track down the source of echos:

  • While speaking or playing music, place your mouse/cursor over the video window of each participant. At the bottom of the window is a volume meter that visually displays the audio they are sending to the studio. If the volume meter moves in sync with your sound, it means you've found the source!
  • If you don't hear an echo and everyone else does, it most likely means that you are the source.
