How to Connect JackTrip to Your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)

Have you ever wondered if you can integrate JackTrip with your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), whether it's Ableton, Logic, Audacity, Pro Tools, or any other? The answer is yes! Let's take a closer look.

We recommend the video version of this article.

Many musicians use Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) for music production.
While JackTrip has its own built-in recording feature, as well as a built-in music player [see this article], including effects like reverbs, panning modules and compressors, integrating JackTrip with your DAW opens up a world of possibilities that we'd like to educate you about.

JackTrip's Audio Device settings allow you to set one input device and one output device with a maximum of two channels (stereo) each. Given this limitation, you can't directly output audio to your Headphones and DAW at once, and you also can't directly have JackTrip 'listen' to your DAW and a separate microphone/ audio interface at the same time.

Thus, you might need third-party audio driver software to bridge acting as a bridge. Here's how you do it:

  1. Utilizing Third-Party Software:

To bridge the connection between your DAW and JackTrip, you'll need third-party virtual audio drivers. These drivers act as a bridge, allowing your DAW to communicate with JackTrip seamlessly. One recommended software is BlackHole, a free virtual audio loopback driver that can facilitate routing audio between applications. You'll need to download and install such virtual sound drivers on your machine in order to utilize them.
  2. Routing Audio Channels:

Think of JackTrip as listening to an input device and providing an output device.
    • Send audio from your DAW to JackTrip
To send audio from your DAW to JackTrip, you'll route the output channels of your DAW to the virtual audio driver (e.g., BlackHole's channels 1&2), and selecting those same channels as your Input Device channels in JackTrip.
That way, your DAW will output its audio to the virtual sound driver, and your JackTrip will 'listen' to that virtual sound driver and send its audio out to all other participants.
    • Record audio from JackTrip into your DAW
Conversely, to send JackTrip audio into your DAW for recording or further processing, you'll route JackTrip's output to the virtual audio driver (e.g., BlackHole's channels 1&2), and choose that same driver and channels in your DAW as the input. Now, JackTrip will send all incoming audio to your virtual audio driver, and your DAW will 'listen' to that virtual audio driver.
  3. Optimizing Latency and Buffer Settings:

Ensuring low latency is crucial for real-time performance. Adjust the buffer size and latency settings in your DAW to minimize delays. Aim for low buffer sizes to ensure fast processing and maintaining synchronization between JackTrip and your DAW.
  4. Exploring Advanced Solutions

If you require more complex routing or would like to send and receive audio from/to your DAW, consider using paid software like Loopback for more advanced routing possibilities. Such applications allow you to route audio between multiple applications simultaneously, offering greater flexibility in managing your audio workflow.
Please note that additional software can impact your overall latency, as they might internally work with a higher buffer size than JackTrip. Please make sure you understand such third-party software well to identify such problems, as well as identifying and optimize their settings to potentially increase processing speed.

Here are a few examples of DAWs / audio programs that you can connect to JackTrip: Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Studio One, Cubase, Logic Pro, Bitwig Studio, Digital Performer, FL Studio, Cakewalk, Reason, Audacity, GarageBand, Acid Pro, Reaper, Adobe Audition, Mixcraft, Ardour, Tracktion Waveform, PureData, MaxMSP, LMMS, Nuendo.
