Using JackTrip to Bring Dante into the Cloud

Dante is the leading AV-over-IP (audio/video over Internet protocol) solution, pioneered by Audinate. It is especially popular for modern recording studios, enabling audio to be easily transported over a LAN (local area networking).

JackTrip is an excellent complement for Dante! Using JackTrip, it's easy to connect Dante AV networks together over the Internet. This enables artist-to-studio and studio-to-studio collaboration without requiring everyone to be in the same physical location.

The two most common approaches are:

  • Using JackTrip's Desktop Application with Dante Virtual Soundcard
  • Using JackTrip's Digital Bridge with the Dante AVIO USB Adapter

Using JackTrip's Desktop App with Dante Virtual Soundcard

The Dante Virtual Soundcard enables any Windows or Mac computer to send and receive audio with a Dante network. You can use it with the JackTrip Desktop App to easily bring your Dante network into the Cloud.

First, configure and start the Virtual Soundcard application on your computer.

Next, download, install and start the JackTrip Desktop App.

Click on the "Audio Backend" tab and make sure that "Dante Virtual Soundcard (x64)" (on Windows; it may be slightly different on Mac) is selected for your "Input Device" and "Output Device".

Finally, copy and paste the IP address of your studio into the "Address of server" field and click the "Connect" button.

You can now use the free Dante Controller application to route audio to and from your Dante Virtual Soundcard. Any audio that you send to your Virtual Soundcard will be sent over the Internet into your studio, and any audio coming from the studio can be played to other Dante endpoints via your Virtual Soundcard.

Using JackTrip's Digital Bridge with the Dante AVIO USB Adapter

You will need two ethernet cables connected to your network switch: plug one cable into your Digital Bridge, and the second cable into Dante's AVIO USB Adapter. Plug the USB end of the adapter into your Digital Bridge, plug a USB-C power adapter into your Digital Bridge, and you should be good to go!

After you register your Digital Bridge, you should see "Dante USB I/O Module" in the web interface:

You can use the free Dante Controller application to route audio to and from your Dante AVIO USB adapter. When your Digital Bridge is connected to a studio, any audio that you send to the AVIO USB adapter will be sent over the Internet into your studio, and any audio coming from the studio can be played to other Dante endpoints via your AVIO USB adapter.
